Dealing with Legionella during Covid

In October 2020, the Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infection published the findings of a leading Covid-BioB study which found “Patients hospitalized with COVID-19 had a high incidence of secondary infections. At multivariable analysis, early need for ICU, respiratory failure, and severe lymphopenia, were identified as risk factors for secondary infections”.

Covid-19 patients are at a greater risk of secondary infections, including those derived from water such as legionnaire’s disease and other Pseudomonas bacteria. In respect of ACOP, L8 – Those responsible for designing, commissioning and managing water systems and associated equipment during this pandemic must ensure water systems do not pose a risk to these patients.
